Red ‘Alaea (pronounced 'ah-lie') Salt is a mixture of sea salt and Hawaiian Red ‘Alaea Clay, a volcanic clay found only on certain Hawaiian Islands. Red 'Alaea clay contains iron oxide, hence the reddish color and is naturally rich with trace minerals. Ancient Hawaiians used Red 'Alaea Salt in ceremonial and religious rituals to cleanse, purify and heal. Today, these salts are used primarily for cooking. Note that in regions of varying humidity, our sea salt may cake up as we do not add any anti-caking agents period. Other food grade salt may include anti-caking agents like calcium silicate, sodium ferrocyanide or potassium ferrocyanide to make their product flow freely. Our salt is still usable if it does cake. For your health concerns, we strongly feel that the minor inconvenience of breaking up the caked salt outweighs the need for these additives.
